- Geothermal. Geothermal power is the power that comes from capturing heat from below the earth’s surface. This heat can provide energy by utilizing steam that comes from heated water pumping below the surface and using that to operate a turbine. This is a less common energy source and is limited to specific geographies. It is costly to build an infrastructure to capture the energy, but geothermal energy leaves no footprint on the ground and causes no environmental pollution.
- Ocean. The ocean can produce both thermal and mechanical energy. Thermal energy is produced using warm water surface temperatures, and mechanical energy is produced by harnessing the ebbs and flows of water. Ocean power is most accessible in coastal areas. Its downsides are that power is impacted by rough and inconsistent weather, and there can be some environmental impacts.
- Hydrogen. Hydrogen can be separated from other elements for electricity and fuel. Hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel, but it requires additional energy to be produced.
- Biomass. Biomass is the organic matter that comes from plants and other organisms that have died. Like burning wood in a fireplace, biomass can produce energy. Additionally, methane gas can be harvested from the natural decomposition of organic materials to produce energy. There isn’t a widespread method for harnessing this source of energy.
