Renewable Energy Services Explained

Renewable Energy Services Explained

In recent years, there have been many discussions and public debates about climate change and global warming. A key element in solving these current and growing problems includes using renewable energy sources to supplement and replace fossil fuel-driven energy.

Humans are a significant cause of global warming and climate change due to our lifestyles, including driving vehicles, heating and cooling our homes, and utilizing electricity for life’s activities. These activities require power, and power for over 150 years has been produced mainly from burning coal, oil, and other fossil fuels.

Using these energy sources to provide electrical power for our human activities produces carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses. Greenhouse gasses trap heat in the atmosphere, thereby raising temperatures on the face of the earth. Global temperatures are rising, and there have been an increase in numbers and severity of extreme weather events, rising seas, changes to wildlife populations, and other climate impacts.

What is Renewable Energy?

The term “renewable energy” refers to energy sources or processes that can be constantly replenished and considered virtually inexhaustible. Renewable energy is energy derived from the natural resources of the earth. In contrast, non-renewable resources include coal, oil, and natural gas.

What Are the Types of Renewable Energy?

These are the types of renewable energy:

  • Solar. Solar energy is produced by capturing the radiant energy emitted by sunlight and converting it into usable power using photovoltaic (solar) cells. Since sunlight is virtually endless, there is an unlimited supply of solar energy. The downsides of solar power include some areas or buildings that don’t have consistent sunlight or facilities with limited space to install solar panels.
  • Wind. Energy is produced by wind flowing over large turbines, which convert the wind flow into electricity. Wind power can be generated by commercial-grade wind-powered generating systems, utility-scale wind farms, and even single-wind turbines. Wind power produces no pollution. It doesn’t produce carbon dioxide or release harmful environmental elements. The downsides are that wind farms require space, they can dominate a skyline, and they create some noise.
  • Hydroelectric. Hydroelectric, hydropower, or water power is generated by water flowing through the dam’s turbines or funneled through the turbines of a river. There are limits to the water sources that can supply hydroelectric power, and there are other concerns regarding disrupting waterways and having impacts on wildlife.
  • Geothermal. Geothermal power is the power that comes from capturing heat from below the earth’s surface. This heat can provide energy by utilizing steam that comes from heated water pumping below the surface and using that to operate a turbine. This is a less common energy source and is limited to specific geographies. It is costly to build an infrastructure to capture the energy, but geothermal energy leaves no footprint on the ground and causes no environmental pollution.
  • Ocean. The ocean can produce both thermal and mechanical energy. Thermal energy is produced using warm water surface temperatures, and mechanical energy is produced by harnessing the ebbs and flows of water. Ocean power is most accessible in coastal areas. Its downsides are that power is impacted by rough and inconsistent weather, and there can be some environmental impacts.
  • Hydrogen. Hydrogen can be separated from other elements for electricity and fuel. Hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel, but it requires additional energy to be produced.
  • Biomass. Biomass is the organic matter that comes from plants and other organisms that have died. Like burning wood in a fireplace, biomass can produce energy. Additionally, methane gas can be harvested from the natural decomposition of organic materials to produce energy. There isn’t a widespread method for harnessing this source of energy.

What Are the Benefits of Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy offers green and clean energy sources that don’t contribute to climate change and can help counteract global warming. They can offer more freely available sources of energy generation and can provide much-improved energy access to developing countries. And most importantly, they can reduce energy bills. Due to the considerable interest in renewable energy, there has been a large increase in job creation to develop and install new sources of energy processes across America.

The Specific Benefits of Solar Power

Solar energy has the least impact on the environment compared to other energy sources. It does not pollute the water, does not produce greenhouse gasses, and does not create any noise. So, it can be a perfect energy source for homes, businesses, and urban areas in general.

Solar energy can reduce a homeowner’s or business owner’s energy bill. Plus, money can be made by selling unused electricity to the utility company.

Solar energy is available everywhere. Solar power can be used as long as there is sunshine and a place to install solar panels.

There is no electricity lost during long-distance transportation as there is with fossil fuels.

Solar power also improves the security of the electrical grid.
